Why Can’t You Follow Your Own Plan

In my last post, we discussed about creating your plan to achieve your goals. But do you know that creating the plan is probably the easiest step in achieving your goals? Following up on your plan is the stage that may take a toll out of you, right?

You can definitely come up with various reasons / excuses about not following your plans. These reasons varies from personal to circumstances. True enough, all these reasons are valid for you. However, if you get to the bottom of it, the fact is you didn’t follow your plan, you didn’t get your desired outcome.

That’s the fact, and everything else is an excuse or you can call it a story. The problem is the more you indulge in these stories, the harder it is for you to follow your plan.

When I started Actionpreneur Pte Ltd in 2003, I got involved with my stories. I was giving reasons after reasons about the difficulty in doing business with the schools.

Fortunately my mentor gave me a thrashing. His thrashing woke me up. I’m an entrepreneur, I am suppose to solve problems and overcome challenges. Since then, challenges have a new meaning to me.

What can you do to have you following your plans?

Post It Up

Since you generated your plans, put it at a place where you can see it easily. Post it up on your notice board, computer screen, the wall in front of your work desk etc.

Out of sight, out of mind. When you don’t see it, you will forget it. Seeing your plans frequently reminds you of your plans.

Big Picture

Seeing your plans frequently can remind you of the reasons in achieving them. It reminds you of your BIG WHY. Why do you want to achieve these goals? Successful people are propelled by their BIG WHY. What is your big why?

When you are struggling with the nitty-gritty details, quickly shift your focus onto the big picture. You will quickly realize that these details are necessary for the big picture. These details actually drive your plan forward.

Daily Task List

Having a plan means that you will have task to complete. List down your daily tasks either the night before, or early in the morning. So you start your day ready to be in action.

Preferably this task list is easily accessible. You can access it anytime, anywhere. Nowadays with smart phones, this becomes a lot easier. You can find many Task List Apps to improve your efficiency. I am using one myself. Once I completed a task anytime, anywhere, I will strike it off from my phone immediately. Then I look for the next task.

Have A Buddy

Just like my mentor who kicked my butt, do you have anyone performing that role?

Most of us require someone to push or sometimes pull us. At times we need someone to give us a shove. Get someone to check-in on you regularly.

“Hey, have you done that thing that you said you are going to do?”
“Oh, I haven’t done it because…”
“Don’t give me that crap, go get it done.”

This is what your buddy must do to support you. If you don’t have a buddy, I can be one for you.

Right now, I don’t only have 1 buddy, I have many buddies. Because my Facebook Page, posts get seen by all the fans. Some of them will call it on me when I slack. Some will thrash me when I starts to have doubt. Some will ask more of me when I am playing too small.

I am practicing these 4 steps religiously. It works for me and I am moving towards in fulfilling my plans. So take these 4 steps and use it.

Feel free to add anything else that works for you. I will be happy to learn new strategies from you.
